As the 2024 elections approach, we pray for Mary’s guidance. May her compassion be an example for us as we elect leaders to guide our local and national communities. As Catholic organizations that work with migrants from the border to the interior, we are inspired by her to work for policies that promote justice and compassion for our most vulnerable neighbors.
Each day of the novena, we will share prayers, petitions, videos, photos, and stories of migrants and the people who accompany them. These resources move beyond mere rhetoric and invite you to get to know those directly impacted by immigration policy.
We invite you to join us in this novena. Pray it with your parish, school, or family to reflect on how your community can commit to standing with migrants during this election year.

Fr. Scott Santarosa, SJ, is the pastor of our Lady of Guadalupe Parish in San Diego, CA. A spiritual home for immigrant families for generations, six months ago this parish also opened a shelter for newly arrived migrants in need. As we begin our novena to our Lady of Good Counsel, listen to the words of Fr. Scott as he invites us to Commit to Stand with Migrants.

MATILDE’S STORY
Kino Border Initative | Nogales, Mexico
Meet Matilde. She is a mother, a wife, and a working woman from the state of Guerrero in southern Mexico. She suffered persecution by government officials and organized crime. As a result, she made the difficult decision to leave her tight-knit family to seek asylum in the U.S.
After arriving in Nogales, Mexico, she encountered the Kino Border Initiative.

- For Matilde, and all victims of crime, that they may find safety and security.
- For communities torn apart by violence, that there may be peace and reconciliation.
- For our elected leaders, that they may enact polices that promote justice and unity.

LUIS’S STORY
Del Camino Jesuit Border Ministries | Reynosa, Mexico
In Ecuador, violent crime has skyrocketed. A bastion of peace and prosperity in Latin America just five years ago, violent deaths have now increased over 500%. Taxi drivers, like Luis, are subjected to much of this violence. His story is not uncommon. However, as he tells it, listen to his witness of faith and hope.
Though his path has included many heartbreaks, from violence in his home country, to kidnapping in Mexico, to waiting for many months on the border, his faith in God—as well as his friendship with the Jesuits of Del Camino Border Ministries—have strengthened him and helped him continue on.

- For migrants in dangerous and uncertain places, that they reach safety quickly.
- For those struggling to find hope, that they find the consolation they need.

ACCOMPANYING MIGRANTS
Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish | San Diego, CA
More than 1 in every 74 people on Earth has been forced to flee their homes since 2021. In 2023 a record number of migrants came to the southern border of the US seeking safety and a better life. When migrants began being released onto the streets of San Diego in October, Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish decided to open their doors and help their neighbors in need.
Six months later, this adventure of solidarity has been a place of encounter with Christ in one another.

- For each of us, that we are able to encounter Christ in the stranger.

RITA AND PETER’S STORY
Ignatian Volunteer Corps | Denver, CO
Rita and Peter are members of the Ignatian Volunteer Corps in Denver, CO, and for the last year they have been supporting asylum seekers in their city. Working through the Jesuit Refugee Service’s Migrant Accompaniment Network, they have helped families find affordable housing, enroll their children in school, apply for work permits and meet immediate needs such as suitable winter clothing. Rita and Peter have learned that for many migrants and asylum seekers, arriving at their final destination in the U.S. does not mean the end of their migrant journey.
Imagine if you had to leave your home because of violence or poverty, and arrived at a place where you didn’t speak the language and didn’t know anyone. A good Samaritan lending a hand could make a huge difference.

GUADALUPE’S STORY
Washington, DC
In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus says to his disciples, “I was a stranger and you welcomed me… [and] whatever you did for one of these least of brothers of mine, you did for me.” A few months ago, a migrant family from Colombia found themselves alone in a shelter in South Texas. With nowhere to go, no money, and just days before their first immigration appointment 2,000 miles away, they felt hopeless.
However, when a community comes together and opens their hearts and hands, hope can be found in desperate circumstances.
INTENTIONS

THE UNDOCU NETWORK
Ignatian Solidarity Network | U.S.
There are hundreds of thousands of young people across the country without any legal status enrolled in colleges and universities. Many of them came to the U.S. when they were very young, only knowing this country as their home. At this year’s Undocu Network Summit, organized by the Ignatian Solidarity Network, a group of them from Jesuit and other Catholic universities came together to share stories, grow professionally, and plan collective actions.
Though their lives have many challenges and uncertainties, you can see from these stories that they are much more defined by their talents and possibilities.

ANTHONY’S STORY
Jesuit Refugee Service USA & Canada | St. Ignatius Loyola Parish, New York City
Today we listen to the story of a young man from Fordham Preparatory School in New York, who put himself in the shoes of a migrant fleeing his home. Though he of course could never know what that man’s journey was truly like, this experience, in the style of Ignatian imaginative prayer, helped him to empathize with those who must migrate.
“Within minutes of my arrival, I was no longer a privileged, Upper East Side kid,” he writes. “I had become Mohammad, a 49-year-old refugee from Somalia looking to flee my country as soon as possible.”

LA HISTORIA DE MATILDE
Iniciativo Kino para la Frontera | Nogales, Mexico
Conoce a Matilde. Es madre, esposa y mujer trabajadora del estado de Guerrero en el sur de México, un lugar sumido en una ola de violencia. Sufrió persecución por parte de funcionarios del gobierno y del crimen organizado. Como resultado, tomó la difícil decisión de dejar a su unida familia para buscar asilo en los Estados Unidos.
Después de llegar a Nogales, México, se encontró con la Iniciativa Kino para la Frontera.

LA HISTORIA DE LUIS

En Ecuador, los delitos violentos se han disparado. Un bastión de paz y prosperidad en América Latina hace apenas cinco años, las muertes violentas ahora han aumentado más del 500%. Los taxistas, como Luis, están sujetos a gran parte de esta violencia. Su historia no es infrecuente. Sin embargo, tal como él lo cuenta, escuche su testimonio de fe y esperanza.
Aunque su camino ha incluido muchas angustias, desde la violencia en su país de origen hasta el secuestro en México y la espera de muchos meses en la frontera, su fe en Dios, así como su amistad con los jesuitas de Del Camino Border Ministries, lo han fortalecido a él y lo ayudan a continuar.

Más de 1 de cada 74 personas en la Tierra se ha visto obligada a huir de sus hogares desde 2021. En 2023, un número récord de migrantes llegó a la frontera sur de Estados Unidos en busca de seguridad y una vida mejor.
Cuando los migrantes comenzaron a ser liberados en las calles de San Diego en octubre, la parroquia Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe decidió abrir sus puertas y ayudar a sus vecinos necesitados. Seis meses después, esta aventura de solidaridad ha sido un lugar de encuentro con Cristo en los demás.

LA HISTORIA DE RITA Y PETER
El Cuerpo de Voluntarios Ignacianos | Denver, CO
Rita y Peter son miembros del Cuerpo de Voluntarios Ignacianos en Denver, CO, y durante el último año han estado apoyando a los solicitantes de asilo en su ciudad. Trabajando a través de la Red de Acompañamiento de Migrantes del Servicio Jesuita a Refugiados, han ayudado a familias a encontrar viviendas asequibles, inscribir a sus hijos en la escuela, solicitar permisos de trabajo y satisfacer necesidades inmediatas, como ropa de invierno adecuada. Rita y Peter han aprendido que para muchos inmigrantes y solicitantes de asilo, llegar a su destino final en los Estados Unidos no significa el final de su viaje migratorio.
Imagínate si tuvieras que dejar tu casa por la violencia o la pobreza y llegas a un lugar donde no hablas el idioma y no conoces a nadie. Un buen samaritano que eche una mano podría marcar una gran diferencia.

LA HISTORIA DE GUADALUPE

En el Evangelio de Mateo, Jesús dice a sus discípulos: "Estaba de paso, y me alojaron... [y] cada vez que lo hicieron con el más pequeño de mis hermanos, lo hicieron conmigo". Hace unos meses, una familia migrante de Colombia se encontró sola en un refugio del sur de Texas. Sin un lugar adonde ir, sin dinero y a pocos días de su primera cita con ICE a 3.000 kilómetros de distancia, se sentían desesperados.
Sin embargo, cuando una comunidad se une y abre sus corazones y sus manos, se puede encontrar esperanza en circunstancias desesperadas.

LA CUMBRE DE LA RED UNDOCU

Hay cientos de miles de jóvenes en el país sin ningún estatus legal matriculados en colegios y universidades. Muchos de ellos llegaron a EE.UU. cuando eran niños y sólo conocen este país como su hogar. En la Cumbre de la Red Undocu de este año, organizada por la Red Ignaciana de Solidaridad, un grupo de ellos de universidades jesuitas y otras universidades católicas se reunieron para compartir historias, crecer profesionalmente y planificar acciones colectivas.
Aunque sus vidas tienen muchos retos e incertidumbres, se puede ver en estas historias que se definen mucho más por sus talentos y posibilidades.

LA HISTORIA DE ANTHONY

Hoy escuchamos la historia de un joven de la Fordham Preparatory School de Nueva York, que se puso en la piel de un emigrante que huía de su casa. Aunque, por supuesto, nunca pudo saber cómo fue realmente el viaje de ese hombre, esta experiencia, al estilo de la oración imaginativa ignaciana, le ayudó a empatizar con quienes deben emigrar.
"A los pocos minutos de mi llegada, ya no era un niño privilegiado del Upper East Side", escribe. "Me había convertido en Mohammad, un refugiado de 49 años de Somalia que buscaba huir de mi país lo antes posible".

Gracias por unirse a la Red Jesuita de Migración de Estados Unidos y Canadá en esta novena a Nuestra Señora del Buen Consejo. Nos hemos reunido en oración durante estos últimos nueve días, para orar a nuestra Santísima Madre para que podamos profundizar nuestro compromiso con los migrantes durante las elecciones estadounidenses de 2024 y que su sabio consejo pueda guiarnos.
Nunca dejemos de orar, para que el Espíritu Santo llene nuestros corazones de un amor y una compasión más profundos por los demás, especialmente por aquellos que huyen por su propia seguridad y prosperidad.

- Nuestra Señora del Buen Consejo y Madre de Ternura, ayúdanos a siempre elegir lo que más nos conduce a amar y servir a aquellas personas que se han visto forzadas a desplazarse, las cuales normalmente están en situación de vulnerabilidad y son olvidadas por nuestra sociedad.
- Nuestra Señora del Buen Consejo y Madre de Sabiduría, ayúdanos a reconocer las injusticias en las políticas migratorias y a ser valientes para alzar nuestra voz en defensa de los derechos de las personas que buscan refugio y protección.
- Nuestra Señora del Buen Consejo y Madre de Misericordia, danos la habilidad para ver más allá de nosotros mismos y así darnos cuenta de las necesidades que enfrentan las personas migrantes. Y que exijamos a nuestros representantes políticos que respeten los Derechos Humanos de quienes huyen de la persecución y la violencia, sin dejarnos a nadie atrás.
- Nuestra Señora del Buen Consejo y Madre de Luz, ilumina los caminos que conducen a espacios de encuentro, para que no dudemos a la hora de mirar a las personas migrantes y refugiadas a los ojos, de escuchar sus historias y de caminar con ellas mientras comienzan su nueva vida como desplazadas.
- Nuestra Señora del Buen Consejo y Madre de Esperanza, haznos portadores de buenas noticias y que así nuestras comunidades sean espacios de bienvenida para que nuestros hermanos y hermanas migrantes encuentren paz y alegría en quienes les reciben.
- Nuestra Señora del Buen Consejo y Madre de Todos y Todas, ponnos con tu Hijo al alzarnos en solidaridad con las personas migrantes y refugiadas.
